1. What are the causes of PTSD? Quite often the cause is a sudden shock of experiencing something very threatening to you or observing someone else being physically assaulted even to the point of death.  It may be the result of physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse.  It could also be witnessing the death of another on a battlefield or even in your own home.  The symptoms may not be immediately apparent but often involve nightmares about the event and sudden flashbacks, even when fully awake, that the traumatic event is about to reoccur perhaps years after the actual event. This is often associated with depressed feelings and even hopelessness.

2.  What are the causes of a panic or anxiety attack? In some ways the causes may be similar to that of PTSD although there is rarely the likelihood of imminent death which is often a factor in the case of PTSD.  Panic attacks often occur in times of great stress when the individual feels disconnected from others and without a meaningful purpose to their lives.  The individual may experience a sudden onset of a variety of symptoms that might include difficulty breathing, a choking sensation, rapid heartbeat, racing thoughts, a feeling often described as "impending doom", and distortions in their sense of time.

Occasionally clients report that they feel they are about to either die or "go crazy".  The immediate cause for the attack may not be immediately apparent and may require a mental health professional to further clarify the cause as well as the treatment for the attacks.  In some cases the panic attack is associated with being around groups of people and finding social contact to be either threatening or irritating in the extreme.  For more information please check www.webmd.com.
